Rage of the Heart finally had its world premiere on April 24th to 27th, 1997, at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Providence, Rhode Island. The Providence shows were the first full theatrical presentation of the musical ever. The premiere was a success and was very well reviewed critically.

So, has anything been changed for the stage premiere?
Says Grant Maloy Smith:
" A few [arrangements] have been changed to avoid a 'dated' sound or to change things that Enrico didn't like. For example, on the CD, FIRE has a bridge where it becomes 'disco-like'. This has been changed. RAGE OF THE HEART itself is less 'rock' sounding and more orchestral, and it uses the entire ensemble to sing the second half. ZERO HOUR, which doesn't fit with the rest of the music, has been dropped completely. But there are other pieces that are not on the CD that are fabulous (the CD couldn't fit everything). For example, in HE MUST BE STOPPED, there is an entirely different section in the middle where Fulbert wrestles with his inner demons and begs God to hear his anger and help him sort through it. Then there is a plea for mercy in Latin (the music is haunting and beautiful) by several women from the chorus, then HE MUST BE STOPPED continues again, culminating in Fulbert's violent crime against Abelard. This is the end of the first act. People walk out of the theatre after the first act a little pale--it is quite powerful and moving.
The order of the songs on the CD is not entirely correct. They were put in that order because they flowed best that way as far as the CD goes. CELEBRATE is really about half way through the show. DEAR HUSBAND DEAR WIFE is near the end."
(These are exerpts from a letter, Grant sent to me. Since our exchange is completely private, none of the above should be quoted without asking for my permission first.)
